The combination of a proven LED lighting system and a reflective liner material applied to the ceiling creates the ideal environment for indoor tennis.
Ideally, tennis should be played outside, but for many of us that is not a reality for a certain number of months out of the year. We believe that if tennis has to be played inside, that the conditions should mimic those that are experienced outdoors meaning the ability to clearly see the ball (which is never a challenge outdoors during the day).
With the advent of LED technology, companies determined that it closely resembles the sun with regards to the quality of light distributed and so it quickly became a popular choice for indoor sports facilities (what are foot candles?), especially sports where lighting is even more critical such as indoor tennis.
Another consideration is the orientation of the technology, whether the lighting is directed down onto the courts or up into the ceiling. With how bright LED technology is, we concluded from multiple tests in our founder's facilities that applying it in an indirect manner made the most sense (learn more about our led fixture). This led to the question of the ceiling area of an indoor sports facility (what is a liner?).
Some indoor sports facilities have ceiling areas that are a nice clean, white and durable material that in combination with an indirect LED application, can create a bright environment without any glare yet provides enough light across the playing area (along with all the other benefits of LED lighting). Other facilities may not have a ceiling that best accommodates an indirect lighting application. There are solutions for improving ceiling areas by applying a highly durable and reflective liner material (the installation process). This will help to efficiently reflect the lighting back onto the playing area and aid in even distribution of light. Depending on the HVAC setup, insulation can be added behind the liner material for increased savings and year-round comfort.
From our 30 years of experience owning, managing, and consulting indoor sports facilities, we've determined that the combination of an energy efficient LED lighting application with a highly durable and reflective liner material creates the optimal environment for indoor sports activities (facility case studies). This combination clearly demonstrates the aesthetic benefits but also the financial ones as well.
We could elaborate into which additional facility improvement considerations make the most sense for indoor sports facilities such as smartcourt technologies, facility management software, or ratings systems based upon our experience, but there are a lot of options on the market and not every facility is the same.
