Installing New LED Lighting During the Indoor Tennis Season

We wanted to share a bit about our approach to installing our LED Tennis Lighting System and Liner System during the winter months and how we make every effort to minimize disruption to facility operations.

Tennis is known for it’s traditions, from etiquette to proper attire on court, some things seem to remain rather solidified when it comes to the game of tennis. This includes the fact that most facilities with indoor tennis courts wait until the summer months to resurface the indoor courts or make any necessary renovations such as new lighting, adding insulation or installing a durable and reflective liner System to the ceiling and walls. Over the last few years, Sports Interiors has steadily encountered more demand for indoor tennis renovations to occur during the winter months or indoor season. This can be due to the fact that facility owners and managers simply do not want to wait until next summer to upgrade the lighting or they want to take advantage of all the electrical and maintenance savings typically included with implementation of energy efficient lighting. Whatever the reason may be, this has led Sports Interiors to adapt to the increased demand in conducting implementations during the busy indoor tennis season. We wanted to share a bit about our approach to installing our LED Tennis Lighting System and Liner System during the winter months and how we make every effort to minimize disruption to facility operations.

With our 30+ years of owning, managing, and consulting with indoor tennis facilities, we understand the importance of having the indoor tennis courts ready and available for the teams, membership, or staff to use and enjoy. To meet the demands of the indoor tennis facilities we work with, this requires careful planning, communication, and execution of our implementation process. This has meant we’ve added personnel with considerable experience in the construction industry as well as with project management. To begin with, our Operations Team will work directly with a facility’s key stakeholders to communicate a clear understanding of expectations and time frames. Prior to the start of the installation, the Sports Interiors Operations Team will coordinate the ordering and delivery of equipment that’s required and communicate regular updates on timelines. In addition, court availability and days our teams can and cannot work will be addressed before the project begins so everyone knows the project schedule for each week that our crew is on site. Further, our Operations team will conduct daily/weekly calls with the facility/maintenance manager to ensure all questions or plans ahead of the project start date are addressed. We take it a step further in that our team will share contact details for our crew members that will be on-site in the event sudden changes or information needs to shared. With the winter months typically a very busy time for indoor tennis facilities, our crews have the ability to work through the night in order to avoid shutting down tennis courts during the day.

Our typical project timeline includes:

- Lighting (our crews can complete 1-2 courts per day and sometimes more depending on the facility layout)

- Ceiling Liner (one bay can be completed in about a day)

- Gable/End Walls (our crews can complete multiple end walls per day)

Our crews typically need to take one court at a time for exclusive use during a lighting installation, but if more courts can be made available, this helps with the efficiency of the project work. Pertaining to installation of our liner system, our crews typically request 2 courts at a time as this work is a bit more labor intensive and there’s more material involved than a lighting installation. If a project has both lights and liner the two teams would work simultaneously and have done this countless times to increase efficiency. In short, we deliver a turnkey install where our crews demo the existing lighting/liner system, properly dispose of the old equipment and quickly install our systems. Before and after the project, we capture photos and light measurements to analyze the work that is completed and share the results with key stakeholders of the facility.
